noun · neuter · a-stem

Meanings

power, strength, might; bodily or effective force

Etymology

From pre-Germanic *h₃ép-lo-m, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃ep- (Kroonen 2013: 2; Rix et al. 2001: 299). The original sense was probably ‘working power, effective capacity’ > ‘strength, might’. Cognates and close comparanda include Latin opus, Vedic Sanskrit अपस् (ápas-), and possibly Hittite 𒄩𒀀𒀊𒈦 (ḫa-a-ap-pár /ḫāppar/) and 𒄩𒀊𒁉𒈾 (ḫa-ap-pí-na- /ḫappina-/) (Kloekhorst 2008: 295–97).
