*angwāną

Runic: ᚨᚾᚷᚹᚨᚾᚨ Pronunciation: /ˈɑŋʷ.ɡʷɑː.nɑ̃/

verb · Weak class 3

Meanings

  1. to be narrow, tight
  2. to become narrow, constricted

Etymology

From the stem *angw- of *anguz + *-āną, from an old Proto-Indo-European proterokinetic inflection *h₂énǵʰ-u-s ~ *h₂n̥ǵʰ-éw-s (Kroonen 2013: 28–29; Ringe 2017: 111). A transparent deadjectival formation, thus literally ‘to be/become narrow’; for the deeper and disputed prehistory of the Weak class 3 suffix, see *-āną.
