*arundiją

Runic: ᚨᚱᚢᚾᛞᛁᛃᚨ Pronunciation: /ˈɑ.run.di.jɑ̃/

noun · neuter · ja-stem

Meanings

  1. a message or communication
  2. an errand, mission, or matter of business

Etymology

Of uncertain origin; a neuter ja-stem, probably reconstructible as *arundiją beside *ērundiją. Old Norse ørendi and erendi, together with Proto-Slavic *orǫdьje, an early loan from Germanic, favor *arundiją, whereas Old English ǣrende, Old Saxon ārundi, and Old High German ārunti point to *ērundiją. Old Norse eyrendi alone could continue **airundiją (Dance et al. 2019: s.v. ernde; Kroonen 2013: 36). Although comparison with *airuz is semantically attractive, the divergent root vocalism makes a direct derivation uncertain. No secure Proto-Indo-European etymology or inherited non-Germanic cognates are known; the older proposal connecting *airuz with Proto-Indo-European *h₁ey- is itself speculative and cannot establish a PIE derivation for *arundiją (Orel 2003: 9, s.v. *airaz ~ *airuz).
