*baitislą
Runic: ᛒᚨᛁᛏᛁᛊᛚᚨ Pronunciation: /ˈbɑi̯.ti.slɑ̃/noun · neuter · a-stem
Meanings
- bit, mouthpiece of a bridle
- bridle; reins
Etymology
From the stem of *baitijaną +*-(i)slą that developed especially beside Weak class I verbs. The original sense was thus an instrument for making a horse bite. Alternatively, an earlier variant *baisla- may continue Proto-Indo-European *bʰoyd-tlo-m, an instrument noun from *bʰeyd-; *bʰoyd-slo-m would have yielded the same Germanic result (de Vries 1977: 31, s.v. beizla -2; Krahe & Meid 1969: 89–90; Seebold 1970: 97). PIE*-tlo- belongs to the inherited *-tlo-/*-tro- instrument-noun formation (Olsen 1988: § 4.2.7). Root cognates include Latin findō and Sanskrit भिनत्ति (bhinátti) (Rix et al. 2001: 70–71) .
