*berilaz

Runic: ᛒᛖᚱᛁᛚᚨᛉ Pronunciation: /ˈbe.ri.lɑz/

noun · masculine · a-stem

Meanings

  1. vessel or receptacle for carrying or containing; basket, jug, pot
  2. perhaps bearer, carrier

Etymology

From *beraną + *-ilaz¹, literally ‘a tool in which to carry things’. The expected early Germanic development of inherited *ber-ilaz is *birilaz through raising of *e > *i before following *i; compare Old Saxon biril and Old High German biril (Fulk 2018: 57; Seebold 1970: 105). An ablaut variant *burilaz is reflected by Norwegian byrel, byrdel and borrowed Finnish purilas (Kylstra et al. 2012: 84).
