*blīwiją

Runic: ᛒᛚᛁᚹᛁᛃᚨ Pronunciation: /ˈbliː.wi.jɑ̃/

noun · neuter · ja-stem

Meanings

lead (metal)

Etymology

Uncertain. Possibly a secondary neuter ja-stem built from the Proto-Germanic stem *blīw- underlying *blīwą ‘color, hue; lead-grey appearance’. The derivative would originally have meant something like ‘lead-colored substance’ or ‘that which is of lead-grey hue’, hence ‘lead’. Possibly related to *blēwaz (‘blue’), given the semantics.
