*blōstmô

Runic: ᛒᛚᛟᛊᛏᛗᛟ Pronunciation: /ˈblɔːst.mɔːː/

noun · masculine · an-stem

Meanings

flower

Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *bʰleh₃-s- + *-tó- (forms deverbal adjectives) + *-mō (forms abstract nouns from verbs) from root bʰleh₃- (‘bloom, flower’). Related to *blōstaz, *blōmô. Compare Latin flōs (‘flower, blossom’) for the s-extension. Though a -tó suffix usually involves a zero-grade root, in this case it may have been added as a secondary derivation or it may be a result of early leveling.
