*blōtą
Runic: ᛒᛚᛟᛏᚨ Pronunciation: /ˈblɔː.tɑ̃/noun · neuter · a-stem
Meanings
offering, sacrifice
Etymology
Uncertain. De (Vaan 2008) notes a commonly posited cognate in Latin flāmen (‘priest, flamen’) from Proto-Indo-European *bʰleh₂- (d-)mn̥, from a root *bʰleh₂- (‘to call out, speak solemnly; worship’) but this is disputed. If the root is correct, the original form would be PIE *bʰleh₂-d-ó-m.
