Etymology
An agentive weak noun derived from *breutaną (‘to destroy, crush, break (open), bud’) with the sense ‘one who portions out’. Built from the zero-grade form *brut- + *-(i)jô(forms agent nouns). The Old English geminate -tt- is due to West Proto-Germanic Gemination. See Ringe and (Taylor 2014).
