Etymology
From pre-Germanic *druktis, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰrewgʰ-ti-s ~ *dʰrugʰ-téy-s, from a zero-grade form of root *dʰrewgʰ- (‘to accompany, be loyal’) with expected change from *-gʰt- > *-ht-via the Proto-Germanic spirant law. Compare Proto-Slavic *drȗgъ (‘companion’). Related to *dreuganą (‘to serve, be a retainer’).
