Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *-tre + *eh₁, made up of the directional adverbial ending *-tre and the emphatic particle *eh₁. The broader PIE ending *-tro/e is also reflected by Sanskrit -त्र (-tra) (Dunkel 2014: 58, 217).
