Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *poḱ-oyé/ó-, an o-grade form of root *peḱ- (‘to spruce oneself up, to be tidy or cheerful’) (Pokorny 1959). Closely related to the strong verb *fehaną (‘to rejoice, be glad’).
