*faimô
Runic: ᚠᚨᛁᛗᛟ Pronunciation: /ˈɸɑi̯.mɔːː/noun · neuter · an-stem
Meanings
maiden, girl
Etymology
Uncertain. Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *péyh₂-mn̥ ~ *pih₂-mén-s, an *men-stem from root *peyh₂- (‘swell (with milk); to be swollen, fat’). Compare the semantics of Proto-Slavic *děva (‘maiden, girl’) and Latin fēmina (‘woman, wife, female’), from PIE *dheh1(y)- (‘to suckle, nurse’). In this variant, a single -m- would be the result of dissimilation in the -mn- cluster.
