From Proto-Indo-European *pod-éye/o-, from an o-grade form of root *ped- (‘to walk, step; to stumble, fall’). Causative of strong verb *fetaną (‘to go, fall’). Cognate with Sanskrit पादयति (pādáyati) (pādáyati, ‘to cause to fall’).
