*haiþī

Runic: ᚺᚨᛁᚦᛁ Pronunciation: /ˈxɑi̯.θiː/

noun · feminine · ī/jō-stem

Meanings

heath, wasteland

Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *kay-t-os (‘forest, wasteland, pasture’), from *kayt- (‘forest, pasture’), with the most certain cognates being in Celtic languages (with Kroonen speculating a borrowing from one branch into the other). Cognate with Proto-Brythonic *koɨd (‘forest’) (Old Welsh coit); outside of Celtic, compare Latin bū-cētum (“pastureland”, literally “cow-pasture”) (“pastureland”, literally “cow-pasture”), Albanian kath (‘type of wheat’), kasht (‘straw’). Whether *kayt- is related to *keyt- (‘to shine’) is unclear.
