*hrēką

Runic: ᚺᚱᛖᚲᚨ Pronunciation: /ˈxrɛː.kɑ̃/

noun · neuter · a-stem

Meanings

  1. saliva
  2. snot

Etymology

Apparently from a Proto-Indo-European *kreg- (‘to spit, caw’), and related to Lithuanian kregė́ti (‘to speak loudly, grunt’). Despite Orel, probably not related to Ancient Greek κρώζω (krṓzō) (krṓzō, ‘to croak’), though both terms do appear to be of ultimate sound-symbolic origin.
