*hrōtą
Runic: ᚺᚱᛟᛏᚨ Pronunciation: /ˈxrɔː.tɑ̃/noun · neuter · a-stem
Meanings
roof
Etymology
Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *kerd- (‘to cut (wood)? > to craft?’); compare Proto-Slavic *korda (‘pile of logs’), and perhaps also Proto-Celtic *kerdā (‘craft, skill’) and Ancient Greek κέρδος (kérdos) (kérdos, ‘profit’). Has also been compared to Old Armenian խրճիթ (xrčitʻ, ‘hut, cabin’), but J̌ahukyan considers this unlikely. Proto-West Germanic *hrātu (‘honeycomb’) may also be related.
