noun · masculine · u-stem

Meanings

cat

Etymology

Uncertain; possible Wanderwort of obscure ultimate origin. Cognate with and traditionally taken as borrowed from Latin cattus (‘cat’); see there for more. Kroonen suggests, on the basis of variable reflexes within Germanic, a derivation through Uralic of Proto-Uralic *käďwä (‘female (of a fur animal)’).
