*kuttô

Runic: ᚲᚢᛏᛟ Pronunciation: /ˈkut.tɔːː/

noun · masculine · an-stem

Meanings

cowl, woolen cloth, coat

Etymology

Of unknown origin. Traditionally derived from a Proto-Indo-European *gudnós, *gʷewd- (‘woolen clothes’), and compared with Ancient Greek βεῦδος (beûdos) (beûdos, ‘costly woman's dress’); however, the Greek is thought to be a loan from Phrygian [script needed] (beudos, ‘statue of a goddess’), that ultimately traces back to Proto-Indo-European *bʰewdʰ- (‘to be awake, aware’), and thus cannot be cognate.
