*lindō

Runic: ᛚᛁᚾᛞᛟ Pronunciation: /ˈlin.dɔː/

noun · feminine · ō-stem

Meanings

  1. linden tree
  2. shield (made of linden wood)

Etymology

Possibly related to *linþaz (‘mild, soft’). Has also been compared to Albanian lëndë (‘wood, material’), Lithuanian lentà (‘(linden) board’), Russian лут (lut, ‘(linden) bast’) (< Proto-Slavic *lǫtъ), thereby perhaps from a Proto-Indo-European *lentéh₂.
