*lingwą

Runic: ᛚᛁᚾᚷᚹᚨ Pronunciation: /ˈliŋʷ.ɡʷɑ̃/

noun · neuter · a-stem

Meanings

heather, ling

Etymology

Perhaps from Pre-Proto-Germanic *lengʷʰom, from Proto-Indo-European *lengʷʰ-. Compare Proto-Slavic *lǫgъ (‘meadow’) from Proto-Balto-Slavic *lanˀgas. The original meaning may have been *“unused land”; Kroonen compares the semantic development of *haiþī (‘heath’). The same semantic pairing exists in modern Irish fraoch.
