*skautaz

Runic: ᛊᚲᚨᚢᛏᚨᛉ Pronunciation: /ˈskɑu̯.tɑz/

noun · masculine · a-stem

Meanings

  1. corner; wedge, protrusion
  2. the corner of a piece of cloth or garment: lap, flap, fold
  3. lap
  4. womb
  5. sheet
  6. a line from the foot of a sail

Etymology

Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kewd- (‘to throw, shoot, pursue, rush’), whence *skeutaną (‘to shoot’); cognate with Proto-Slavic *kỳdati (‘to fling’), Sanskrit चोदति (codati) (códati, ‘to impel’). The semantic development would be “to shoot out” > “to jut out” > “projection, edge”.
