*stukkōną

Runic: ᛊᛏᚢᚲᛟᚾᚨ Pronunciation: /ˈstuk.kɔː.nɑ̃/

verb · Weak class 2

Meanings

  1. to stick
  2. to stop, halt

Etymology

An apparent iterative to *stikaną (‘to stick’), with analogical *-u- from the zero-grade in other words. The semantic shift from "stick" to "stop" may be via "to stick" > "to stick many things into one place and get said place stuck" > "to be stuck, stopped" > "to stop". Piecewise doublet of *stikkōną.
