*sundą
Runic: ᛊᚢᚾᛞᚨ Pronunciation: /ˈsun.dɑ̃/noun · neuter · a-stem
Meanings
- swimming
- sound, strait
Etymology
From earlier *swumdan (compare Gothic 𐍃𐍅𐌿𐌼𐍃𐌻 (swumsl, ‘pool’)), with quasi-Indo-European form *swm̥-tó-m (though whether the root existed in Proto-Indo-European is under question). By synchronic analysis, a nominal derivative of *swimmaną (‘to swim’); see there for more.
