According to Orel, from Proto-Indo-European *dr̥-to-s, a participle from *der- (‘to split, tear’); cognate with Latvian dìrst (‘to poop, shit’). Note that Kroonen prefers to reconstruct the Germanic as *turzdaz; see there for more.
