*wranhō

Runic: ᚹᚱᚨᚾᚺᛟ Pronunciation: /ˈwrɑ̃ː.xɔː/

noun · feminine · ō-stem

Meanings

angle, corner, nook

Etymology

Of uncertain origin. Per Mikkola, perhaps from a Proto-Indo-European *wrónkeh₂, from the root *wrenk- (‘to turn, twist, bend; to clutch, grasp’), and possibly formal cognate with Proto-Balto-Slavic *ránkāˀ (‘clutch, hand, arm’). On the other hand, others, including Orel and de Vries, prefer a secondary derivation from *wringaną (‘to squeeze, wring’).
