*wurdahuzdą

Runic: ᚹᚢᚱᛞᚨᚺᚢᛉᛞᚨ Pronunciation: /ˈwur.ðɑ.ˌxuz.dɑ̃/

noun · neuter · a-stem

Meanings

word-hoard; treasury or store of words

Etymology

From Proto-Germanic *wurdą ( < Proto-Indo-European *wr̥dʰom) + PGmc *huzdą ( < PIE *kewdʰ-tóm).

This one is just for fun, and very likely not a word that reaches all the way back to Proto-Germanic, but nevertheless, a word of some antiquity (and, of course, the name for this dictionary). The earliest securely datable attestation of the word is in the Metres of Boethius 6.1:

Ða se Wisdom eft wordhord onleac … (“Then Wisdom again unlocked [the] word-hoard …”)

though its appearance in Widsith, Beowulf, Andreas, Vainglory, and The Order of the World means its use likely predates this, possibly by centuries. Its constituents, *wurdą and *huzdą are common among all of the Proto-Germanic daughter languages, including Gothic, as well as the North and West Germanic branches.
