*āhwijaz
Runic: ᚨᚺᚹᛁᛃᚨᛉ Pronunciation: /ˈɑː.xʷi.jɑz/noun · masculine · ja-stem
Meanings
sea, ocean; in North Germanic also the personified sea or sea-being
Etymology
Probably from pre-Germanic *h₂ēkʷ-yó-s, a lengthened-grade relational derivative of Proto-Indo-European *h₂ékʷ-eh₂, also the origin of Proto-Germanic *ahwō. The long vowel is from an inherited lengthened grade in the derivative (Kroonen 2013: s.v. *egja-).
