*-(a)nē
Runic: (ᚨ)ᚾᛖ Pronunciation: /ɑ.nɛː/suffix · forms adverbs
Function
forms adverbs with ablative direction
Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European postposed adverbial *-néh₁, originally the instrumental/adverbial particle *né-h₁, used after directional and pronominal bases (Dunkel 2014: 60–62). The initial *-a-is secondary within Proto-Germanic, generalized from forms where *-nē < PIE *-néh₁ was attached to an adverbial/allative base in *-o, e.g. *upo-néh₁ > PGmc *ubanē, later reanalyzed as *ub-anē, giving a productive or semi-productive Proto-Germanic directional suffix *-anē (Kroonen 2011a: 85–92).
