Etymology
From *aft- + *-(a)nē. The base *aft- was secondarily abstracted from *after after reanalysis of *af-ter as *aft-er; *after itself continues a locative comparative formation *ap(o)-tero-, from Proto-Indo-European *apó + *-tero- (Kroonen 2013: 3; Watkins 2011: s.v. apo-). The suffix *-(a)nē belongs to the Proto-Germanic directional system, where prepositional/adverbial bases form an allative, locative, and ablative series, perhaps ultimately involving PIE *-néh₁ (Dunkel 2014: 60–62; Kroonen 2011a: 85–92).
