Meanings

last, latter; following, next

Etymology

From the Proto-Germanic adverbial stem *aft- (‘after, behind’), extracted from *after + *-umô. The base is ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *apó + *-tero-, reanalyzed as *apt-er from the original *ap-ter, while *-umô is the weak n-stem continuation of PIE *-m̥-o-, an extremal or absolute-superlative suffix used especially to form spatial adjectives from local adverbs (Fulk 2018: 219; Ringe 2017: 318).
