*agalaitį̄
Runic: ᚨᚷᚨᛚᚨᛁᛏᛁ Pronunciation: /ˈɑ.ɣɑ.lɑi̯.tĩː/noun · feminine · īn-stem
Meanings
impudence, importunity; shameless or indecent boldness
Etymology
From *agalaitijaz + *-į̄. Kroonen (2013: 3) derives *agalaitijaz by haplological reduction from earlier **aglalaitjaz, from *aglaz + **laitijaz (‘annoying; excited’), with the latter compared internally to Rhinelandic German leizig. The first constituent belongs to the Germanic *ag-/*agl- ‘fear, distress, shame’ group, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₂egʰ- (van Sluis et al. 2023: 214).
