*ahtō

Runic: ᚨᚺᛏᛟ Pronunciation: /ˈɑx.tɔː/

noun · feminine · ō-stem

Meanings

consideration, deliberation; attention, regard

Etymology

Uncertain. Possibly from pre-Germanic *h₃okʷ-t-eh₂, a nominal t-extension to Proto-Indo-European root *h₃ekʷ- ~ *h₃okʷ-. Closely related to *ahjaną (Kroonen 2011a: 93; Kroonen 2013: 7; Lloyd & Springer 1988: 117). The velar delabialization before *-t- is regular (Ringe 2017: 113). There are no secure direct Indo-European cognates.
