*akraną

Runic: ᚨᚲᚱᚨᚾᚨ Pronunciation: /ˈɑk.rɑ.nɑ̃/

noun · neuter · a-stem

Meanings

fruit of a tree, especially a nut or other mast such as an acorn

Etymology

From an Indo-European formation *h₂eǵ-r-on-o-m or *h₂og-r-on-o-m, containing a poorly understood base *h₂eǵ-r- ~ *h₂og-r- and the suffix *-on-o-, possibly made up of the individualizing suffix *-on- enlarged by thematic *-o- (Pronk 2015). The base may be related to Proto-Indo-European *h₂éǵros. The formation may originally have denoted an individual fruit or berry. Cognate with Proto-Celtic *agronā, reflected in Welsh aeron; the Celtic form probably represents a collective in *-on-eh₂. Lithuanian úoga, Latvian oga, Proto-Slavic *agoda, and Tocharian B oko may contain the same root, though they represent different formations and their precise relationship is disputed (Kroonen 2013: 18–19; Matasović 2009a: 27–28; van Sluis et al. 2023: 215).
