*Alamann-

Runic: ᚨᛚᚨᛗᚨᚾ Pronunciation: /ˈɑ.lɑ.mɑnn/

proper noun · masculine · consonant stem

Meanings

  1. a member of the Alemanni
  2. in the plural, the Alemanni, a Germanic people or coalition of Late Antiquity

Etymology

A compound of *ala- and *mann-, literally ‘all humans’ or ‘the people as a whole.’ The name may originally have designated an inclusive or heterogeneous coalition, however, the exact original force of the name (‘men of every origin,’ ‘the whole people,’ or an intensified ‘men par excellence’) remains uncertain (Hummer 1998: 1–12, 25–26; Onions 1996: 24; Orel 2003: 12).
