*alasnō

Runic: ᚨᛚᚨᛊᚾᛟ Pronunciation: /ˈɑ.lɑs.nɔː/

noun · feminine · ō-stem

Meanings

awl; a pointed tool used for piercing leather or similar materials

Etymology

From the derivational stem of *alaz, with an instrument suffix *-asnō- (Kroonen 2013: 19–20). The base *alaz is ultimately related to *ēlō and Sanskrit आरा (ā́rā), but its precise Proto-Indo-European formation is uncertain: Kroonen tentatively reconstructs *h₁oh₁-ló- and derives *ēlō and Sanskrit आरा (ā́rā)from *h₁éh₁l-éh₂-, while Mallory and Adams give the more general reconstruction *hₓólehₐ- (‘awl’, in standard laryngeal notation: *Hóleh₂-) (Kroonen 2013: 19–20; Mallory & Adams 1997: 37). The formative *-asnō- ultimately reflects PIE *-es-neh₂ ~ *-os-neh₂, with *-s- originating in an s-extended root or an s-stem; formations of this type mainly produced feminine concrete nouns in Germanic (Krahe & Meid 1969: §96).
