*alþį̄

Runic: ᚨᛚᚦᛁ Pronunciation: /ˈɑl.θĩː/

noun · feminine · īn-stem

Meanings

  1. oldness, eld
  2. period of life or time, age
  3. olden times, yore

Etymology

Possibly from a reformulation of Proto-Indo-European *h₂él-ti- from root *h₂el-, as an īn-stem (de Vries 1977: s.v. elli). It belongs to the same word family as *alaną and *aldaz. West Germanic *aldīn- reflects later analogical generalization of *d (Ringe & Taylor 2014: 232).
