noun · neuter · ja-stem

Meanings

  1. appearance, form

Etymology

From *anda- + *wlītaną + *-(i)ją. The compound originally denoted ‘looking toward’ or ‘that which is seen opposite (one)’, hence ‘appearance, outward form’ and specifically ‘face’. Gothic 𐌰𐌽𐌳𐌰𐍅𐌻𐌴𐌹𐌶𐌽 (andawleizn) is likely related (Lehmann 1986a: 35–36).
