*andwurdijaną

Runic: ᚨᚾᛞᚹᚢᚱᛞᛁᛃᚨᚾᚨ Pronunciation: /ˌɑnd.ˈwur.ði.jɑ.nɑ̃/

verb · Weak class 1

Meanings

to answer, reply; respond

Etymology

From *and- (‘against, toward in opposition’) + *wurdijaną, a denominative of *wurdą; originally ‘to speak against, respond’, hence ‘to answer’ (Barðdal & Eythórsson 2020: 212–216). Reflexes include Gothic 𐌰𐌽𐌳𐍅𐌰𐌿𐍂𐌳𐌾𐌰𐌽 (andwaurdjan), Old English andwyrdan, Old Saxon andwordian, Old Frisian ondwardia, and Old High German antwurten (Lloyd & Springer 1988: s.v. antwurten²). Though they are related, the verb is not directly derived from*andawurdiją. The contrast *and- : *anda- reflects an inherited alternation whose distribution became partly morphologized in Proto-Germanic (Lühr 1979: 136–138). Gothic preserves the contrast in𐌰𐌽𐌳𐌰𐍅𐌰𐌿𐍂𐌳𐌹 (andawaurdi) : 𐌰𐌽𐌳𐍅𐌰𐌿𐍂𐌳𐌾𐌰𐌽 (andwaurdjan) (Lehmann 1986a: 396, s.v. waurd).
