*andawurdiją
Runic: ᚨᚾᛞᚨᚹᚢᚱᛞᛁᛃᚨ Pronunciation: /ˈɑn.dɑ.ˌwur.ði.jɑ̃/noun · neuter · ja-stem
Meanings
answer, reply
Etymology
From *anda- + *wurdą + *-(i)ją, literally ‘counter-speech, words spoken in return’. The suffix belongs to the neuter ja-stems continuing Proto-Indo-European -yo-, with *-i- from Sievers’ law ((Fulk 2018: 150). Kluge (1989: s.v. Antwort) compares Gothic 𐌰𐌽𐌳𐌰𐍅𐌰𐌿𐍂𐌳𐌹 (andawaurdi), Old English andwyrde, Old Saxon andwordi, and Old High German antwurti, noting the sense ‘speech’ in the second member. Krahe and Meid (1969: 44) identify *-ja- as a neuter collective and, more generally, a composition suffix in prefixed nouns. Orel (2003: 475) reconstructs an underlying derivative **wurdiją (‘speech’) from *wurdą.
