anchor

Etymology

Borrowed from Latin ancora, itself borrowed from Ancient Greek ἄγκυρα (ánkūra) (Lloyd & Springer 1988: s.v. anker; Weiss 2009: 112). The loan entered coastal Germanic early through contact with the Romans around the Lower Rhine and North Sea and subsequently spread into Scandinavian, where Old Norse akkeri reflects early nk > kk (Lloyd & Springer 1988: s.v. anker). Ancient Greek ἄγκυρα (ánkūra) was traditionally connected with PIE *h₂enk-, but Beekes (2010: 13) regards its -υρα (-ūra) suffix as characteristically Pre-Greek and rejects an inherited Proto-Indo-European formation; its ultimate etymology is therefore uncertain.
