*Anulô
Runic: ᚨᚾᚢᛚᛟ Pronunciation: /ˈɑ.nu.lɔːː/proper noun · masculine · an-stem
Meanings
a male given name, probably originally meaning ‘little ancestor’ or functioning as a hypocoristic name
Etymology
A diminutive/hypocoristic formation in -l-, probably from *anô, or alternatively from the corresponding personal-name stem *Anu-, as also found in names such as *Anuwinduz (Peterson 2004: 37). The name is directly attested in Proto-Norse as ᚨᚾᚢᛚᚨ (anula), on the Nydam sword-sheath fitting; Stoklund (2003: 176) identifies it as a masculine personal name formed with the familiar diminutive -l- suffix. Compare Old English Onela, Old High German Anilo/Analo, Gothic 𐌰𐌽𐌰𐌻𐌰 (Anala)/𐌰𐌽𐌹𐌻𐌰 (Anila), and Old Norse Áli/Óli; the variation Anul- ~ Anil- ~ Anal- appears to belong to the same hypocoristic name family (Lloyd & Springer 1988: s.v. ana²; Peterson 2004: 37). Pokorny (1959: 36–37) likewise treats Old Norse Áli (< Anilo), Old English Anela, and Old High German Anelo as diminutive formations belonging with the Germanic ‘ancestor’ word.
