Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *h₂énti-o-m, built to the locative *h₂énti of the PIE root noun *h₂ént-s ~ *h₂n̥t-és, from *h₂ent- (de Vaan 2008: 45; Kroonen 2013: 31). The root accent is required to produce Proto-Germanic *þ (compare related *andijaz < post-PIE *h₂antíos (Ringe 2017: 157) with oxytone accent). Cognate or closely related forms include Lithuanian ántis, Latin antiae, and Old Irish étan. The anatomical sense is also found in Hittite 𒄩𒀭𒍝 (ḫa-an-za /ḫants/), Hieroglyphic Luwian 𔐚 (hant-), Tocharian A ant and Tocharian B ānte (van Sluis et al. 2023: 235). Compare also *umbi.
