*argį̄

Runic: ᚨᚱᚷᛁ Pronunciation: /ˈɑr.ɣĩː/

noun · feminine · īn-stem

Meanings

  1. unmanliness, baseness; cowardice
  2. indecency, shamelessness

Etymology

From *argaz + *-į̄, with stem *argīn-. Reflected by Old Norse ergi and probably by Proto-Norse ᛡᚱᛡᚷᛖᚢ (ArAgeu), a dative singular occurring in the Stentoften and Björketorp curses (Heidermanns 1993: 102; Rova 2024; Schulte 2006: 43, 61–62; Schulte 2008: 9). Alternatively, Krause and Looijenga analyze ᛡᚱᛡᚷᛖᚢ (ArAgeu) as the dative singular of a separate jōn-stem, corresponding to a nominative **argijǭ (Krause 1966: 212–13; Krause 1971: §97)
