*askǭ
Runic: ᚨᛊᚲᛟ Pronunciation: /ˈɑs.kɔ̃ː/noun · feminine · ōn-stem
Meanings
ash, ashes
Etymology
Usually connected with Proto-Indo-European *h₂eHs-, but the exact formation is uncertain. Cognate with Sanskrit आस (ā́sa-) and Hittite 𒄩𒀀𒀸 (ḫāšš-); compare also Old Armenian աճիւն (ačiwn), probably an enlarged formation in -g- (Kloekhorst 2008: 318–19; Martirosyan 2010: 44; Yates 2022: slides 2–24). Northwest Germanic *askōn- contrasts anomalously with Gothic 𐌰𐌶𐌲𐍉 (azgō). Kroonen tentatively explains the divergent -sk- : -zg- by a pre-Germanic compound of *h₂ed- and *dʰegʷʰ-, but regards the phonological development as obscure (Kroonen 2013: 38).
