*aunōną
Runic: ᚨᚢᚾᛟᚾᚨ Pronunciation: /ˈɑu̯.nɔː.nɑ̃/verb · Weak class 2
Meanings
to lamb, yean; to bring forth a lamb
Etymology
From *aunaz + *-ōną, literally ‘to produce a lamb’. The reconstruction is supported by Old English ēanian, whose attested forms clearly show Weak class 2 inflection, together with Dutch, Frisian, Low German, and Swedish reflexes. Stiles (Stiles 2018: 250) notes that the underlying noun *aunaz is independently presupposed by Old English ge-ēan and apparently directly continued by Swedish dialectal ön in vara i ön, providing additional evidence for the nominal base of the verb. For more on the somewhat controversial etymology, see *aunaz.
