*ausaną
Runic: ᚨᚢᛊᚨᚾᚨ Pronunciation: /ˈɑu̯.sɑ.nɑ̃/verb · Strong class 7b
Meanings
to scoop up, to draw (a liquid); to pour or sprinkle
Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *h₂ews-, probably through a secondary full-grade thematic present *h₂ews-e/o- formed in pre-Germanic (Kroonen 2013: 43, s.v. ausan-; Rix et al. 2001: 275–76, s.v. h₂eu̯s-). The inherited PIE present was probably zero-grade *h₂us-yé/ó-, reflected in Palaic 𒄷𒍑𒅆𒄿𒅔𒀭𒋫 (ḫuššīnta) (Hansen 2015: 55) ; LIV² treats the e-grade thematic formation continued by Germanic as an innovation (Rix et al. 2001: s.v. h₂eu̯s-, 275–76). Cognate with Latin hauriō, reflecting analogically full-grade *h₂ews-yé/ó- and showing secondary, probably hypercorrect h- (de Vaan 2008: s.v. hauriō, 281; Zair 2025: 230); compare Ancient Greek ἀφύσσω (aphússō) (Beekes 2010: 180).
