east

Etymology

Probably a substantivized neuter of the *austra- directional formation represented by *austraz¹; compare Old Norse austr. It should be distinguished historically from the short *austa- formation, which EWA derives independently from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ews(-s)-to- (de Vries 1977: s.v. austr; Lühr 2017: s.vv. ôst, ôstar).
