*awahaimaz

Runic: ᚨᚹᚨᚺᚨᛁᛗᚨᛉ Pronunciation: /ˈɑ.wɑ.ˌxɑi̯.mɑz/

noun · masculine · a-stem

Meanings

maternal uncle; mother’s brother

Etymology

From earlier *awun-haima-, a compound of the n-stem *awun-/*awan- (belonging to *awô) + *haimaz, originally probably ‘one living in or belonging to the maternal grandfather’s household’ (Boutkan & Siebinga 2005: 86–87, s.v. em; Lehmann 1986a: 53, s.v. *awo). The interpretation of the second constituent as *haimaz is generally preferred, though comparison with Welsh tad cu has prompted an alternative interpretation ‘dear’ (Boutkan & Siebinga 2005: 87). The first constituent ultimately continues Proto-Indo-European *h₂éwh₂os; compare Latin avunculus, Lithuanian avýnas, Old Church Slavonic ujь, and Welsh ewythr (Mallory & Adams 1997: 238).
