bosom

Etymology

Exact origin unclear. Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₂ǵʰús (‘arm; ; whence *bōguz, ‘upper arm, shoulder’’), but it would have needed to come from a form such as pre-Germanic **bōg-s-mo-s > **bōh-smaz > *bōsmaz . Compare *faþmaz, ‘outstretched arms’). An origin with a root meaning ‘to blow, swell’ is often posited (see, for instance, (Orel 2003)), **bʰes- with cognates including Sanskrit भस्त्रा॑ (bhástrā) (bhástrā, ‘bellows’) and Ancient Greek ψῡ́χω (psū́khō) (psū́khō, ‘to breathe, blow’) via a lengthened o-grade form, bʰōs-mo-s, but that root is itself contested.
